A Band Of Two Parts
Some of you may remember the stories of Gene Loves Jezebel or Christian Death, all bands with two versions. It is often confusing for fans to understand which band is legitimate and usually the story is not so straightforward.
So whats with Nosferatu and The Nosferatu, I hear you ask?
I started this band in 1987 with Sapphire Aurora after we felt our previous act The Dreaming had run its course. We wanted a name that matched our no-compromise gothic principles, at a time when goth was becoming a dirty word among our peers.
Contrary to popular myths floating around the web, this band was running for a year with Steve Cachman on guitar playing shows in and around London. Steve left to join Rubella Ballet shortly after we recorded our first 3 track cassette. Damien Deville only joined in late 1988 in time to record our next 3 track cassette called Blood Lust.
History shows the band as carrying on without me in 1995. The real story was of a band that imploded in 1994 on a tour to promote The Prophecy, largely due to gross misconduct by Mr Deville. Despite leaving our tour and going AWOL for 3 days, he proceeded to cancel the tour by phoning many venues and caused its collapse.
Legal nonsense followed for about a year, causing fractures in the remaining band and after this Mr Deville decided, without authorisation, to form an entirely new band around himself and call it Nosferatu.
An injunction was sought to prevent this, however the complexities of UK copyright law prevented it from taking place due to the unclear chances of success.
In the years that followed this band legitimised their endeavours in many fans eyes. They exploited the back catalogue both live and in published works and in many fans eyes became a genuine band.
I accept most fans just want to listen to great music and probably do not care. Why should you? As an artist, having to watch ex members butchering your hard work and exploiting your song catalogue is hard to accept.
My message to music fans is hang on in there and watch this space for exciting new music as The Nosferatu is very much a living band. New music will be released soon...
